A Large Shopping Bag

Hello, my dears,

I realized that I need a larger bag for shopping. So today I sewed myself one. The bag is square and has a wide, reinforced bottom. The handles are secured several times on the inside, so they shouldn't tear out. And I reinforced them on the inside with interfacing, so they won't cut into your hand when the bag is full. Of course, it also has a lining. I adjusted the bag size and handle length exactly to my size and needs. You can only do that when you make things yourself.

Of course, one bag isn't enough for me, so I'll sew another one in the next few days. Today was the test run, but I'm quite happy with it.

Best regards, Ina

Each side naturally has a different pattern so it doesn't get boring. That's why there are several pictures.

Very nice, Ina, and with a matching lining, too. I like it. How big is it, roughly?

Nice shopper! You can always use one of those!

Out of curiosity, may I ask what you used to reinforce the bottom?

Thank you so much for your compliments—I’m really happy to hear that :-)
The side panels measure 35 x 35 cm, and it is 12 cm deep.

I reinforced it with iron-on interfacing. Unfortunately, it was a leftover piece and no longer had any print on it. But after ironing it on, it was nice and sturdy. I only ironed the interfacing onto the bottom, so only the bottom is reinforced. The rest of the bag should feel softer to the touch.

Best regards, Ina

Dear Ina,

your bag turned out great—a real designer piece. Congratulations!

You’ve really become a pro by now. I’m amazed at everything you can do. Until now, I didn’t even know that iron-on interfacing like this existed. That makes it pretty easy.

I hope you keep coming up with such wonderful ideas. Knowing you, you’ll never run out of them.

Warm regards from
Monika

Too bad you don’t remember anymore. Thanks anyway!

The shopper bag in my avatar is about the same size, and I was curious if you use something else for reinforcement that I haven’t thought of yet. That’s why I asked. But it’s no big deal.

Hi needle-mistress,
your shopper bag in your avatar looks really nice, too. Patchwork, right? Too bad we can’t see it in a larger size. Would you mind posting a large picture of it here in this thread? I’d really appreciate it.

At the spot where I wanted to reinforce the bottom (just the bottom) of the bag, I considered simply inserting a suitable piece of flexible plastic (the back panel of a binder) between the outer fabric and the lining and sewing the side seams closed. This insert would have moved only minimally, since it’s flat and doesn’t curl up. The fabric shopping bags you get at Ald.. have this kind of bottom reinforcement. I always took it out because it was just lying loose inside. But with our bag, you can place it between the outer fabric and the lining. And you could even wash it along with the bag. Maybe I’ll try this option next time.

Best regards, Ina
