crochet pattern

Hello, I have a small problem with my pattern—it’s for an Advent–Christmas table runner. In the first row, there are two full squares at the beginning and end, but unfortunately I don’t know what to crochet in those spaces. I understand the 45 squares. But I don’t understand why three full squares equal seven stitches. As far as I know, one full square is 3 double crochets. Now, my last question: Do you work in back-and-forth rows? I’d really appreciate an answer.

There’s also a smaller filet crochet technique where the empty squares consist of 2 double crochets with a chain stitch in between. In that case, it would be correct that 3 full squares consist of 7 double crochets.

Could it be that the pattern is based on this technique?
