The LOMA hat is a versatile hat pattern that’s fun and varied to knit. Its visually striking effect is created simply by changing colors every round and working 1x1 rib throughout. The pattern is easy to follow and includes plenty of helpful tips and tricks as well as video tutorials. This design is both practical and stylish, with a textured stitch pattern that adds visual interest. You will start at the brim and work the entire hat in the round, shaping the crown with decreases.
GAUGE
22 sts x 29 rounds = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) in 1x1 ribbing after blocking, measured unstretched
The pattern is suitable for advanced beginners - medium leveled.
You get a multiple page PDF document with written row by row instructions; charts are offered when needed. Techniques are described and video tutorial links are provided if needed as well.
SIZES
The stitch pattern is very stretchy, so one size fits a large range of head sizes.
You can easily try the hat on as you go to adjust the length to your liking.
Baby / toddler / kids / adult XS / S / M / L / XL
Designed to be worn with negative ease of 5–10 cm (2–4 inches)
NEEDLES
Circular needles in size 4 mm (US 6) to obtain gauge, with a length of 40 cm (16 inches), or long circulars for the magic loop method. Optional: double-pointed needles to work the crown.
You can work the entire hat with circular needles using the magic loop method or start with circular needles and switch to double-pointed needles at the crown.
YARN
DK-weight yarn or yarn to obtain gauge
Sandnes Garn, Double Sunday (DK; 100% merino wool; 108 m (118 yds) per 50 g), sample 1(front page) in 6580 bla natt and 4511 lilac snow, sample 2 (page 3) in 5045 plum and 5811 arctic ice
Knitting for Olive, Merino, held double (light fingering; 100% merino wool; 250 m (273 yds) per 50 g) in shades slate green and fennel seed
BC Garn, Loch Lomond (DK; 100% wool; 150 m (164 yds) per 50 g) in shades 13 (Beige) and 16 (Midnight blue)
METRES NEEDED
You need around: 50 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 110 / 120 m (55 / 55 / 65 / 75 / 85 / 100 / 120 /130 yds) of color A and color B each. If you are not sure whether you have enough yarn, you can work the inside of the folded edge using scrap yarn in a different color. This can be a fun and eye-catching detail too.
Yarn amounts may vary slightly depending on your knitting style and the yarn you are using! Always have a bit more in stock to be on the safe side.
