Felted knitting—does felted crochet work too?

When you look around online for info on felting,
everyone only ever talks about felted knitting
—meaning you knit something first and then wet the whole thing or put it in the washing machine until it has felted

but does that also work with crocheted items, or is there some reason it wouldn’t?
Does anyone here know anything about this?
Knitting isn’t really my thing
but I’d also like to try felting sometime without having to knit right away
so it would be nice if it worked without knitting.

Hi muetzekatze,
I’ve never felted anything before.
But when I looked it up on Google, all I found was that you should just make knitted or crocheted items oversized so you can felt them in the washing machine, for example.
So I think it doesn’t matter whether you knit or crochet before felting.

I’m no expert on these things, though—it might be a good idea to wait and see if a felting expert wants to chime in.

When it comes to felting, it doesn’t matter which technique was used to make the piece—you can weave, knit, or crochet it, or even just layer the fibers on top of each other (but that’s a different topic :-) ).
What’s important for felting is the fiber—specifically, always pure wool that’s either unspun or has been only lightly twisted during spinning. This is the case, for example, with wool fleece or carded wool (unspun), roving, and felting wool. The more the fiber has been twisted, the harder it is to felt. You should always do a gauge swatch and, ideally, wash it along with your next delicate laundry load using wool detergent (since this is how it will be felted later in the washing machine as well); this is the best way to calculate how large the piece needs to be.

Thanks for your explanations.
I don't think I'll do that for now.

Apparently, it's not quite as easy as I had imagined,
even though the result looks very nice in some cases,
for example here:

It’s really not that hard: you buy felting yarn—it’s pretty inexpensive, too ;-)—crochet a sample, and toss it in the washing machine. Or you can buy a pattern; there are great ones for crocheted ballerina shoes that are both crocheted and felted. The instructions there explain everything in detail, and all the measurements have already been calculated.

I’m not sure yet whether I want to try this or not.
Thanks anyway for the tips.

Yes, it works really well—I saw a pattern somewhere on Fischer or Junghans.
Drops has some too.
