Can you wash crocheted or knitted items in the washing machine?

when I buy something in a store, I know how to wash it, but what about the things I make myself? Where can I find washing instructions?

Hi Kradensna,

Items made from sock yarn or wool with a superwash finish can go in the machine.
I’d be careful with everything else. You can also find washing instructions on the label of the yarn you used.

I machine-wash almost everything—except for items made with very fine, thin yarns.

Hey there... The care instructions are on the yarn label :)

If something isn’t dirty, I’d just wash it by hand :)

That way, the items simply stay nice for longer :)

For shawls or ponchos, for example (as I said, if there’s no mud or anything on them), it’s often enough to just let them air out for 1–2 days - they smell especially good when it has just rained and you hang them outside, on a covered balcony of course...

Another great tip is to dilute some lemon juice with water, spray or dampen the item with it, and then put it out in the fresh air

If it really does have to go in the washing machine - for leg warmers or similar, because they get dirty - use the wool cycle at a maximum of 30 degrees

I think it’s also worth mentioning that you should weave in all the ends securely before washing it in the washing machine, so that no loose ends come undone or anything like that.
