can anyone tell me what half grannies are? I only know regular grannies.

you need half granny squares, for example, for a triangular shawl to get a straight edge. If you were to crochet it using only full granny squares, you’d have straight sides, but a jagged neck edge. That’s where the half granny squares come in.
