Bring this sweet little chick to life – my 7-year-old son thought it was so cute that he immediately adopted it.

You can, of course, knit a whole family in many beautiful colour variations. Instead of DK yarn, you can also use Aran yarn and simply adjust your needles to 3 mm – this way you will automatically create different sizes.

The pattern does require a bit more experience in parts, especially when it comes to attaching the
wings and the beak.

The wings (Work this 2x)
Cast on 6 stitches and divide them evenly onto 3 needles (you can use 4 if you are used to working with 4 needles). Then join the stitches to work in the round, making sure they are not twisted.

1. Round:                 6 K (6 St)
2. Round:                 6 K (6 St)
3. Round:                 *2 K, 1 Inc* Work this 2x (8 St)
4. Round:                 8 K (8 St)
5. Round:                 8 K (8 St)
6. Round:                 *3 K, 1 Inc* Work this 2x (10 St)
7. Round:                 10 K (10 St)
8. Round:                 10 K (10 St)
9. Round:                 *4 K, 1 Inc* Work this 2x (12 St)
10. - 17. Round:      12 K (12 St)

Cut the yarn without binding off. Place the first 3 and the last 3 stitches onto one needle, and the remaining 6 stitches onto another needle. Then set the work aside.

The Beak
Cast on 14 stitches and divide them evenly onto 3 needles. Then join the stitches to work in the round.

Sew the beginning of the beak closed using the mattress stitch and set it aside as well.

The Feet (Work this2x)
Cast on 14 stitches and divide them evenly onto 3 needles. Then join the stitches to work in the round.

1. - 6. Round:          14 K (14 St)
The stitches are now cast off together. To do this, divide the 14 stitches evenly onto 2 needles. Hold the needles next to each other and knit the first stitch from both needles together. Then knit the second stitch from both needles together and pass the first stitch over it. Continue in this way until all 14 stitches have been cast off.

24 + 25. Round:      30 K (30 St)
26. Round:               *3 K, 1 Dec* Work this 6x (24 St)

At this point you will start with filling the chick. If you want to use the cardboard for the base, insert it first and then fill with stuffing. Make sure to keep adding stuffing from here on.

27. Round:               24 K (24 St)
28. Round:               The Wings are attached in this round.
Knit the first 3 stitches of the round.
Then hold the finished wing against the next 6 stitches and knit 3 stitches together each time (1 stitch from each wing needle and 1 stitch from the body). Repeat this 6 times in total. Knit the next 6 stitches. Then attach the second wing in the same way.
Finally, knit the last 3 stitches to complete the round. (24 sts)

40.+41. Round:       The beak is now attached over this two rounds:
Work Round 40 until the last 3 stitches remain. Then hold the finished beak against the next 6 stitches and knit 3 stitches together each time (1 stitch from each beak needle and 1 stitch from the body). Repeat this a total of 6 times.
This begins Round 41. Complete the round by knitting the remaining 55 stitches. (58 st)
42. Round:               *8 K, 1 ab* Work this 6x (52 St)
43. Round:               52 K (52 St)
44. Round:               *7 K, 1 Dec* Work this 6x (48 St)
Place a marker in Round 44 to mark the position for the eyes.

45. Round:               48 K (48 St)
46. Round:               *6 K, 1 Dec* Work this 6x (42 St)
47. Round:               42 K (42 St)
48. Round:               *5 K, 1 Dec* Work this 6x (36 St)
49. Round:               36 K (36 St)
I recommend inserting the eyes here in Round 44 if you are using safety eyes; otherwise, it will become too tight. Add a little more stuffing at this point as well.

50. Round:               *4 K, 1 Dec* Work this 6x (30 St)
51. Round:               30 K (30 St)
52. Round:               *3 K, 1 Dec* Work this 6x (24 St)

54. Round:               *2 K, 1 Dec* Work this 6x (18 St)
55. Round:               *1 K, 1 Dec* Work this 6x (12 St)
56. Round:               * 1 Dec* Work this 6x (6 St)

Finish the knitted chick by using a tapestry needle to pick up the last 6 stitches and pull them tight.

I added a few little strands of hair to my chick. To do this, I cut a few strands about 8 cm long, attached them to the top of the head using a crochet hook, and then trimmed them all to the same length.

Finally, weave in the remaining yarn ends inside the body and sew the little feet to the bottom.

I hope you enjoyed this pattern. If you knit it, I would love to hear your feedback or read your comment. Feel free to share your project on Instagram and tag me: @_lovelyyarns
