Illusion of Squares – A Scarf with an Optical Twist
Clean lines, fascinating optical effects, and an incredibly lightweight feel.
At first glance, this scarf appears to be made up of a multitude of squares. But looks can be deceiving! The clever interplay of horizontal and vertical lines of varying lengths creates a fascinating optical illusion — without actually knitting any squares at all.
The scarf is knitted using the double-knitting technique with fine lace-weight yarn. The result is a wonderfully lightweight scarf with a beautiful drape that still provides comfortable warmth. The high-contrast combination of black and white emphasises the geometric pattern and gives the design a timeless, modern elegance.
Fancy creating your own colour combination?
This pattern invites you to experiment! Whether you prefer classic black and white, harmonious tone-on-tone shades, or an eye-catching gradient yarn, every colour combination gives the scarf a whole new look.
What to expect:
• A sophisticated geometric pattern with a surprising optical illusion
• Knitted using the double-knitting technique
• A lightweight, beautifully draping scarf that provides cosy warmth
• Plenty of room for your own colour combinations and creative experiments
With Illusion of Squares, you can create a special accessory that combines sophisticated knitting with timeless design — perfect for yourself or as a lovingly handmade gift.

Width: 25 cm Length: 164 cm
The scarf can be made longer or shorter by one or more pattern repeats, each adding or subtracting approximately 23 cm.
• Yarn: Lana Grossa Cool Wool Lace, 100% merino wool (approx. 400 m / 50 g): 100 g (= 2 balls) in white (colour 28) and 100 g (= 2 balls) in black (colour 24).
My total yarn consumption for a scarf measuring 25 cm wide and 164 cm long was 136 g. Yarn consumption may vary slightly depending on your individual knitting style.
Of course, this scarf can also be knitted using another yarn with a similar meterage. Make sure to choose a yarn that feels soft and comfortable against the neck and does not itch. The same amount of yarn is required for each colour.
• Knitting needles: 2.5 mm (US size 1.5)
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
• Scissors
