The following techniques you have to know already:

  • cast on
  • knit and purl
  • knit in the round with double pointed needles
  • bind off
  • crochet chains

The following techniques are explained in full detail:

  • decreasing
  • increasing
  • sewing and embroidering techniques
  • provisional cast on
  • short rows
  • 3-needle bind-off

Knit as tight as possible, so the stuffing will not show. A good gauge for the yarn mentioned below would be 27 stitches times 38 rows = 10 times 10 cm = 4 times 4 inches
Of course you can use any yarn you want (or you have left over). With the gauge shown above the Holy Family measures approximately:
Jesus: length 15 cm = 6 inches
Mary: height 23 cm = 9 inches
Joseph: hight 26 cm = 10 inches

Materials you need:

  • Lana Grossa Cool Wool Merino Superfein (100 % Merino wool, 175 yards (160 m) per 1.76 ounces (50 g)) 1 skein each in SAND, RED and LIGHT BROWN. Half skein each in PINK, LIGHT BLUE, BLUE and BROWN, leftover in YELLOW
  • Marys shawl: Approx 15 g sock yarn 4-ply in BLUE
  • Joseph‘s hair an beard: Lana Grossa ONDA (86 % Alpaca, 13 % Polyamid, 1 % Elastan; 150 m / 50 g) Alternatives: – Lana Grossa TENDENZA (LL 100 m / 50 g) – mohair yarn, held double or threefold – fluffy or eylash yarns
  • 4 black beads or safety eyes, ø approx 5 – 7 mm
  • Thick Felt for the base, approx 15 x 30 cm = 6 x 12 inches
  • Circular needle and set of size 3 US (3 mm, 12 UK) double pointed needles, crochet hook size G US (4 mm, 8 UK)
  • Embroidery needle, sewing needle, darning needle, scissors, safety pins
  • Polyester wadding or similar, glue, compass
  • Optional: nylon socks, rice or polyester granule

      Dear Pauline, that's no problem at all. Go to the top of this page. Click "account", then click "Downloads". A list with your purchased patterns appears. Look for the holy family, click blue download button. Then click Zip file.
      When the file is on your computer, open the zip and you will find two pdf files, one in German and one in English.

      Liebe Karin, es freut mich, dass sie dir gefallen :-) Die Größen sind wie folgt: Jesus ca. 26 cm, Maria ca. 23 cm, Jesus ca. 15 cm. Diese Größen erreichst du, wenn du wie ich die Lana Grossa Cool Wool verwendest. Sollte die Familie dir zu groß sein, kannst du aber auf 4-fädige Sockenwolle umschwenken, sie werden dann ein ganzes Stück kleiner. (Wie klein, kann ich dir allerdings nicht sagen, ich hab's nicht ausprobiert.)
