For me, Valentine’s Day always seems to come up so suddenly. After Christmas and New Year’s, I sometimes barely notice how quickly it’s already mid-February.
That’s why I always love quick, last-minute gift ideas or decorations. I needed about 40 minutes for one piece, though I was also watching some TV at the same time.
The heart squares are perfect as drink coasters or as a highlight on the table.
The great thing is that very little yarn is used, so it’s ideal for using up leftover scraps.
Size:
Approx. 11 x 11cm
If a yarn with the same gauge is used
30 Dc x 11 rows
Material:
Lace Yarn (Fingering) approx. 5 gr
I used yarn which had 50 gr to 280 m
(if you use a different weighted yarn you might need more or less of the yarn)
Crochet hook 1.75 mm
Gauge in the filet crochet pattern:
10 x 10 cm: 10 Blocks length x 10 Blocks height
The Pattern is written in US terms:
St: Stitch
Ch: Chain
Slst: Slip stitch
Sc: Single crochet
Hdc: half double crochet
Dc: double crochet
Ch sp: chain space
Bl: Block
Sp: Space
Info for when worked with the Row by Row explanation:
The Chain stitch counts as a first stitch unless its stated differently.
For each Dc from the previous round we’ll work either 1 Dc or 1 Ch, and always 2 Dc in the chain spaces.
Whenever the pattern calls for 2 Ch, we jump over 2 stitches and work the next Dc in the following stitch (this is not explained in each row so remember that 2 ch are always followed by jump over 2 stitches)
The Row always begins with 3 Ch which counts as first stitch and ends with a last Dc in the third Ch from the previous row.
When working chain stitches make sure not to work them too tight.
If you work it via the Graph:
You’ll find the graph after the Row explanation.
The Decoration has 11 Blocks and 11 rows.
The Row always begins with 3 Ch (which is counted as the first stitch) and a minimum of 3 Dc in the following 3 stitches, and ends with a minimum of 3 Dc in the last 3 Stitches and the very last Dc in the third Ch from the previous row.
When working chain stitches, make sure not to work them too tight.
Start with the Graph:
Loosely cast on 37 stitches and work the first Dc in the 4. Stitch from the hook (a row has always 34 stitches, either Dc or Ch stitches)
The Valentine's Day Decoration:
Cast on 37 not too tight
(remember the 3 ch at the beginning of a row is counted as the first stitch, after 2 ch we jump over 2 stitches and the very last Dc is always worked on top of the 3rd ch from the previous round)
1. Row:
work the first Dc in the 4th stitch from the hook and work 33 Dc in each following stitch (34 Dc)
2. Row:
3 Ch, 3 Dc, 2 Ch, 10 Dc, 2 Ch **1 Dc, 2 Ch** Work this 8x, 4 Dc (34 St)
3. Row:
3 Ch, 3 Dc, 2 Ch, **1 Dc, 2 Ch** Work this 3x, 4 Dc, **1 Dc, 2 Ch** Work this 3x, 4 Dc (34 St)
4. Row:
3 Ch, 3 Dc, 2 Ch, **1 Dc, 2 Ch** Work this 2x, 10 Dc, **1 Dc, 2 Ch** Work this 2x, 4 Dc (34 St)
5. Row:
3 Ch, 3 Dc, 2 Ch, 1 Dc, 2 Ch, 16 Dc, 2 Ch, 1 Dc, 2 Ch, 4 Dc (34 St)
6. Row:
3 Ch, 3 Dc, 2 Ch, 22 Dc, 2 Ch, 4 Dc (34 St)
7. Row:
3 Ch, 3 Dc, 2 Ch, 22 Dc, 2 Ch, 4 Dc (34 St)
8. Row:
3 Ch, 3 Dc, 2 Ch, 10 Dc, 2 Ch, 10 Dc, 2 Ch, 4 Dc (34 St)
9. Row:
3 Ch, 3 Dc, 2 Ch, 1 Dc, 2 Ch, 4 Dc, 2 Ch, **1 Dc, 2 Ch** 2x, 4 Dc, 2 Ch, 1 Dc, 2 Ch, 4 Dc (34 St)
10. Row:
3 Ch, 3 Dc, 2 Ch, 10 Dc, 2 Ch **1 Dc, 2 Ch** Work this 8x, 4 Dc (34 St)
11. Row:
3 Ch, 33 Dc (34 St)
Cut off the thread and sew the Ends 😊
