Katniss Scarf - knitted version

Product description

Here is a version of the popular Katniss scarf in the film the Hunger Games.

The original is (I think) needle bound and not knitted. I do not like the fit nor the backside of the original and the necessary wide collar is makes it cold on the neck.

This variant is knitted with a needle size10. The wool can be either super bulky (E.g. Bravo big Schachenmayr) or take a thinner yarn and knit with 2-3 yarn simultaneously.
I have worked with handspun merino wool and have needed 600gr. Less may be required, depending on the type of material.

The scarf is knitted crosswise with short rows. I thought that it is best understandable, if I write out every row, even if it is a short row.
There are several ways to knit short rows. I'm doing this with a yarn over, which is then knitted together with the following stich. Of course, you can choose a different version for short rows.

(He scarf can also worked with my wrong side as the right side, which you see in the picture.)

The pattern is actually not very difficult. You should be able to knit, purl and yarn over.

Difficulty: medium

Required materials:
Needle size 10

  • ideally double pointed needle set size 8

Hi Kylie-Michelle, it´s really 10mm (super bulky yarn)
  • Hello,
My sister purchased this pattern for me to knit her the scarf/shawl. I am still a slightly novice knitter and I am having a hard time with line 9. 9. Knit all STS according to pattern and yarn over after every „knit“ stich (=purl stich of the right side). Repeat 4
times in total, starting from the 10. stich. I completed the pattern portion with the yarn overs. I was confused as to what you mean for repeat and 10. Stitch am I doing four additional rows? And what is 10. Stitch? Thank you for your help

Hello Rhiannon, the KatnissScarf is indeed a challenging pattern. In row 9 you will have to yarn over 4 times, so you will have 24 stiches and 4 yarn overs. Space the yarnovers so, that they are made after a "knit" stich. The first knit stich where you this, is after the 10th stich (the first of the "4 times knit1 purl2" part) Then you purl 2 knit 1 and yarn over again. And so on. So the yarn overs are all in the "4 times knit1 purl" part. After that you will have 5 stiches left (2 purl and 3 seed stiches). In row 10 you will knit these "yarn overs" through the back loop and therefor your stiches are increased to 28).
There is a youtube video for the first rows in german with english subtitles, but the quality is not good, because i had to make it after work in a bad light. Maybe it is still helpful
