According to legend, the Jade Emperor once invited the animals of his land to a grand feast. Twelve accepted the invitation, but had to cross a raging river on their way. The perilous journey meant that each animal arrived at a different time. This marked their place at the banquet: Rat – Ox – Tiger – Rabbit – Dragon – Snake – Horse – Sheep – Monkey – Rooster – Dog – Pig arrived at the festive place one after the other. At the same time, the wise emperor assigned each animal a year in the order of their arrival.
The Year of the Horse begins with Chinese New Year on February 17, 2026, and this year it is associated with the element of fire. In its honor, I designed the "Fire Horse" knitting pattern for a cozy adult scarf in a double-knit style, which you can now easily knit yourself. The double-knit technique involves knitting two contrasting yarn colors simultaneously, so that both sides display the negative image of the other. This makes the scarf a fiery eye-catcher from both sides.
Required skills:
Note: To achieve a clean, color-separated edge, I used the Italian cast-on and Italian bind-off. The edge stitches are worked in a chain stitch. Mastering these techniques is advantageous for a more aesthetically pleasing result.
IMPORTANT: This guide does NOT contain technical instructions. Mastery of basic techniques or a willingness to learn them (e.g., by watching one of the many well-explained YouTube videos) is required to complete this project.
What you get:
You will receive a zip-compressed folder containing a 15-page instruction booklet (font: Calibri, font size: 12, DIN A4) in PDF format. Each row is conveniently counted row by row, greatly simplifying the knitting process as you don't need to count the individual stitches yourself. A graphic chart is NOT included. The instructions are available in both German and English.
Difficulty level:
Medium
Size may vary depending on the yarn used.
Using 3mm circular knitting needles, I knitted with yarn that yields a gauge of 28 stitches x 39 rows per 10 x 10 cm. The finished scarf was approximately 19 cm wide and 170 cm long. At the beginning and in the middle of the project, you can lengthen the scarf slightly if desired.
