Is there a trick to this? I want to crochet animals using a thin, long-haired yarn, but I just can’t figure out where to insert the hook. I’ve already tried running a second strand through it, but it doesn’t seem to work.

this fuzzy yarn is much easier to knit than to crochet. 
If the trick with the carrying-along thread doesn’t work, I’d maybe try knitting instead.

Hi. Try using a second strand of yarn in a slightly different color from the fluffy yarn. Usually, the same color is enough too, just a bit lighter or darker. That way, you can see the individual stitches very clearly, especially since they turn out quite large with the fluffy yarn and the corresponding hook size. I’ve already crocheted a few figures like this and can really recommend it. 

I guess I misread that. You meant fuzzy yarn, not plush yarn.... But give it a try anyway—it might work well for that too.

I’ve already crocheted several animals using teddy yarn. For me, the only thing that helps is counting, counting, counting. You can easily make up for a single stitch difference, precisely because you can’t see the stitches. For bigger mistakes, the only solution is to unravel the round and start over. But here, too, practice makes perfect. The second animal went much faster.

With fluffy yarn, the only things that help are counting, cheating a little (if you miss a stitch, just add one back in, etc.), and crocheting more loosely. Everything else is just practice. The nice thing is that after brushing, those little mistakes aren’t noticeable ☺
Just give it a try.... It’s definitely worth it. I’ve already crocheted a dog this way using “Peppina” by Lana Grossa ????

I work a lot with fringed or “eyelash” yarn—is that what you mean? If you always brush the “eyelashes” back (toward the wrong side), you can see the stitches pretty well. The wrong side will then become the right side later on. I hope that makes sense.

I place stitch markers at short intervals, so I only have to count short stretches. That works pretty well. Otherwise, as the others have already said: Don’t worry—you won’t notice small mistakes!
