I’ve been making my own greeting cards for years because I’ve always found the ones in the shops can be quite expensive sometimes. Especially when you need a few cards throughout the year, it can really add up. So I often think, why not just make one myself and spend a little more on the actual gift instead? I also really like that I can make the card exactly how I want it and add my own little personal touch. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated, and I think handmade cards are often much more special than something you simply pick up in a shop.
Materials you will need

- DK yarn in the colours of your choice. You need less than 1 gram of yarn for each heart.
- 3 mm crochet hook
- Card stock, approx. 250 g/m²
- Scissors
- Glue
- Sewing needle for sewing in the ends
- Thick black marker
I simply measured and cut the card stock to get the kind of standard card sizes I wanted. The small card measures 14 x 14 cm, and the large card measures 19.5 x 14 cm.
The large heart measures approx. 4 x 3 cm, and the small heart approx. 2.5 x 2 cm.
Abbreviations (US Terminology):
MR: Magic Ring
ch: chain
sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
tr: treble crochet
How to crochet the hearts:
Both hearts are really quick and easy to crochet, and you only need a very small amount of yarn. The small heart is worked in one round, while the large heart is worked in two rounds.
The small heart
You start with a Magic Ring and work 2 chains. Then work 2 tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 1 dc, 2 hdc, 2 dc and 2 tr into the Magic Ring.
To finish, work 2 chains and a slip stitch into the Magic Ring to close the round. You can then pull the ring closed as usual. Don’t pull it too tightly, so the heart keeps its nice shape. Finally, sew in the two ends.

The large heart
The large heart is worked exactly the same way as the small heart in the first round. The difference is that we add a second round around it, which gives the heart its larger size.
Round 1:
You start with a Magic Ring and work 2 chains. Then work 2 tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 1 dc, 2 hdc, 2 dc and 2 tr into the Magic Ring.
To finish, work 2 chains and a slip stitch into the Magic Ring to close the round. You can also pull the ring slightly closed at this point.
Round 2:
Round 2 starts with 2 single crochets around the 2 starting chains from Round 1. Then work 2 single crochets into each of the next 2 stitches.
Next, work 1 single crochet into each of the next 4 stitches. Into the next stitch, work 1 single crochet, 2 chains and 1 single crochet. This creates the nice, pointed bottom of the heart.
Then work 1 single crochet into each of the next 4 stitches. Finally, work 2 single crochets into each of the last 2 stitches.
Finish the round with 2 single crochets around the starting chains and secure with a slip stitch.
You can then simply sew in and trim the ends. Your large heart is now finished and ready to decorate your handmade card.

Making the cards
For my large card, I made 3 large hearts, and for my small card, I crocheted 3 little hearts. Of course, you can use as many hearts as you like, make more or fewer, or even mix the two different sizes together. There are really no rules here, so you can make your card however you like. I just really like the number 3, so for me, 3 hearts looked just right. 😊
To attach the hearts to the cards, I used regular craft glue. I would recommend using only a small amount of glue, as you don’t need much to hold the little hearts in place. If you use too much, it can spread out around the edges of the hearts and make the card look a bit messy.
For the large card, I used a thick black marker to draw 3 little “strings” underneath the hearts, so they look like little heart shaped balloons. I thought this was a really cute way to use the crocheted hearts and make them look a bit more like a finished card design. I then decided to keep the rest of the card quite simple and added the word Love underneath.
For the smaller card, I kept it even simpler. I just glued on 3 little hearts and wrote Happy Birthday underneath them, as I needed a birthday card at the time.
Of course, you can write whatever you like and make the card as personal as you want. You could change the wording depending on the occasion, add a name, or simply write a little message of your own. That’s one of the things I like about making the cards myself, you can easily change them to suit whoever you are making them for.

I’ve always thought that I have really terrible handwriting, so I was actually a little unsure about writing the words on the cards myself. I was worried it might ruin the look a little, but looking at the finished cards, I actually think my handwriting works quite well with them. They aren’t too fancy or overloaded with decorations, but they still have that handmade and personal feel to them. I think that is what I like most about them. They don’t look perfect, but that somehow makes them feel even more personal and special.
