Crochet Your Own Flower Bouquet: Free Crochet Pattern for a Floral Table mat

This crochet pattern is designed for ambitious and experienced crocheters who enjoy detailed projects and have plenty of patience. As the design uses many different colours and yarn strands, it requires a great deal of attention and concentration. You should also be comfortable with colour changes and know when it makes sense to start a new ball of yarn or carry colours across your work.

I often used more than one ball of the same colour and combined techniques from both tapestry crochet and intarsia crochet. In particular, the colours along the left and right edges were worked from separate balls of yarn and were therefore not always carried across the row. The colours in the centre sections, however, were usually carried across until they were needed again.

If you have not worked with multiple colours at the same time very often, I recommend taking your time with the colour changes. After a few rows, you will usually find a comfortable rhythm and the technique will become much easier. It is especially worth working carefully on the flowers so that the different colour sections stand out clearly and neatly.

I also recommend printing out the chart before you begin. Simply save the image, print it out, and use it alongside the written instructions. This makes the pattern much easier to follow and allows you to see at a glance how far a colour should be carried and where it is best to start a new ball of yarn.



Size:
Approx. 27 x 33 cm when made with Aran-weight cotton yarn.

Materials:
4 mm crochet hook
Aran-weight cotton yarn in various colours. I, personally, prefer working with cotton and therefore recommend it for this project.
Please note that the yarn amounts listed are only estimates. Depending on how often you carry your yarn strands and which technique you use, your actual yarn consumption may vary from mine.
Grey: 65 gr
Brown: 5 gr
Yellow: 12 gr
Green: 14 gr

I chose not to use colour abbreviations and instead wrote out the full colour names. As the project uses a large number of different colours, I found this approach to be clearer and easier to follow.

Important information about the pattern:
- The beginning chain stitch is not counted as a stitch.
- Each row contains 50 stitches
- A basic knowledge of tapestry crochet is required, as the technique is not explained in this pattern.
- Experience carrying yarn colours is also required, as I do not explain where colours are carried or where I started a new ball of yarn for the same colour.
- Even-numbered rows are wrong-side rows, and odd-numbered rows are right-side rows. This is important so you know where to leave unused yarn on the back of your work.

Cut the remaining yarn ends and weave them in neatly. The finished table mat can then be blocked to help the design stand out beautifully and give the piece a neat, polished finish.
