Crochet Projects for Mother’s Day #2: Card with Crocheted Appliqué

Friday, May 8, 2026

In my small series of last-minute Mother’s Day gift ideas, I’m sharing different projects that are quick to make but still feel personal. Alongside small crocheted flowers, bookmarks, and a small basket, of course a card should not be missing. Sometimes, it is a personal card that turns a simple gift into something special.

This Mother’s Day card with crocheted heart balloons is a lovely idea if you only have a little time but still want to give something handmade. The small hearts are quick to crochet and are then glued onto a card like balloons. A little stick figure is added, holding the heart balloons in its hand. The design is simple, loving, and not overloaded.

I especially like this card as an addition to a gift voucher. Especially for Mother’s Day, it does not always have to be a big gift. Sometimes, spending time together is much more valuable: breakfast, coffee and cake, a walk, a little trip together, or a home-cooked meal. With a handmade card, a voucher like that immediately feels much more personal.

Even if you only realize the evening before that you still need a small gift, this card is still very doable. You only need a few leftover yarn scraps, sturdy paper or card, glue, and a pen. Depending on how many hearts you crochet and how detailed you make the card, you can finish it in about 30 minutes.

For my card, I used slightly thicker paper so that it stays stable and does not warp too quickly from the glue. You can use brown kraft paper, white card, watercolor paper, or any other nice paper that is suitable for cards. The important thing is that it is not too thin.

You can choose the colors freely. Classic Mother’s Day colors like pink, red, or bright pink work beautifully, of course, but softer shades like cream, dusty rose, lilac, or natural tones also look lovely. If you combine several hearts in slightly different colors, the card immediately looks more lively.

The card is kept intentionally simple, but it can easily be adapted. You can use only three hearts or create a whole little bunch of balloons. A short message such as “Happy Mother’s Day,” “For Mom,” or “So glad you’re here” also works well. If you prefer a very simple look, you can also just write the message inside the card.

This way, just a few materials turn into a personal Mother’s Day card that is quick to make but still looks like a thoughtful idea. It works well as a small gift, as an addition to a crocheted present, or as a pretty way to present a gift voucher.

Below, I’ll show you step by step how to crochet the small hearts and turn them into a card with heart balloons.

Materials

  • Cotton yarn in different colors
  • 2.5 mm / 3.0 mm crochet hook, or a hook size suitable for your yarn
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue or hot glue
  • Sturdy paper / card
  • Permanent marker or acrylic marker

Size

The finished heart has a diameter of approx. 2.5–3 cm.

Abbreviations

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • MR = magic ring
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • tr = treble crochet

Pattern

Start with a MR.

Now crochet 3 ch, 3 tr, 4 dc, 2 ch, 4 dc, 3 tr, 3 ch, and 1 sl st into the MR.

Here you can also see the whole pattern as a crochet chart:

Cut the yarn and pull the MR closed. Knot the starting yarn tail and the ending yarn tail together, then cut one yarn tail short. The other yarn tail needs to stay long, as it will later become the string of the heart balloon.

Finishing

First, place your hearts in the upper third of the card and arrange them until you are happy with the layout. Then glue them in place with hot glue or craft glue.

Once the glue has dried, bundle the hanging yarn tails together and secure them as well with a small dot of glue.

Now you can draw the little stick figure. If you are unsure, you can lightly sketch it with a pencil first or practise on a separate piece of paper. I first draw the arm starting from the point where the balloons are held. Then I add the body as a slightly curved line. The head goes on top, followed by the second arm. I drew the legs in a walking motion, but of course you can draw them however you like.

Finally, trim the “balloon strings” to the desired length.
