With this crochet pattern, you can create a beautiful dragon wind spinner that twists into a magnificent spiral mobile.
Designed as a flexible construction kit, it allows you to easily craft three different dragon sizes (S, M, L) and custom, wire-reinforced spiral bands.
The pattern includes all steps for the cute faces with unique snout pads and innovative bat wings crocheted seamlessly in one piece.
Difficulty Level:
• Easy to Medium – Perfect for motivated beginners with basic skills as well as advanced crocheters.
Required Skills:
• Magic Ring (MR)
• Chain, slip stitch, and single crochet
• Increases and decreases
• Crocheting in continuous spiral rounds (head) and in rows (wings/band)
What you will get:
• You will receive a professionally designed, logically structured PDF file.
• The pattern consists of a detailed written text (no confusing charts) with step-by-step instructions.
The final dimensions of your finished wind spinner depend on how long you crochet the initial chain for the spiral and how tightly you wrap the band around the bottle. When using the recommended cotton yarn (yardage 125m/50g), the approximate guide measurements from the hanging loop to the bottom prism are as follows:
• Size S (Compact / Head circumference 30 stitches):
Total length approx. 35 to 40 cm (14 to 16 inches) – The head has a diameter of about 5 cm (2 inches). Perfect as a dainty eye-catcher for car windows or small niches.
• Size M (Medium / Head circumference 36 stitches):
Total length approx. 45 to 50 cm (18 to 20 inches) – The head has a diameter of about 6 cm (2.4 inches). The ideal standard size for regular living room windows and sheltered balconies.
• Size L (Mega / Head circumference 42 stitches):
Total length approx. 55 to 65 cm (22 to 26 inches) – The head has a diameter of about 7 cm (2.8 inches). A proud, majestic XXL model that creates a stunning visual impact in the garden or on the patio.
• Yarn: Classic, high-quality 100% cotton yarn (yardage approx. 125 m / 50 g / Sport weight, e.g., Gründl Cotton Quick or Schachenmayr Catania). You are not tied to any specific brand and can use any color combination you like!
• Yarn Consumption: Approx. 30 to 50 g per dragon model for the main color, plus a small amount of a contrasting color for the wing borders and details.
• Crochet Hooks: You will need a 3.0 mm (US C or D) crochet hook for the head and all small details. Important: For the initial foundation chain of the spiral band, you must switch to a hook half a size larger (3.5 mm / US E) so that the chain stitches do not get too tight.
• Wire (The Secret to Stability): Stainless aluminum craft wire (bending wire) with a thickness of maximum 1.0 mm (18 gauge) or slightly thinner (e.g., 0.8 mm / 20 gauge) to keep the spiral band lightweight so it spins perfectly.
• Safety Eyes: 1 pair of black safety eyes. Choose the size according to your model: approx. 8–10 mm (Size S), 10–12 mm (Size M), or 12–14 mm (Size L).
• Stuffing: High-quality, washable polyester fiberfill to stuff the head firmly.
• Tools & Notion: Small pliers (to bend the wire ends safely), a blunt yarn needle for sewing and embroidery, scissors, a stitch marker or a contrasting piece of yarn, and straight pins to secure the parts before sewing.
• Optional Decoration: Transparent nylon thread (fishing line) for hanging, beautiful wooden or glass beads, Japanese coins, or a sparkling suncatcher crystal prism as an eye-catcher for the bottom end.
• Optional Finish: Regular laundry spray starch (applied at the very end to the fully assembled and shaped wind spinner to preserve the spiral form perfectly).
