Crochet Projects for Mother’s Day #3: Mug Coaster with Tulip or Heart Border

In my small series of last-minute Mother’s Day gift ideas, I’m sharing different projects that are quick to make but still feel personal. Alongside a Mother’s Day card with crocheted heart balloons, small flowers, and bookmarks, this time I have a practical little idea for a coffee break: a crocheted mug coaster with a decorative border.

Originally, I had planned to crochet a small basket. But while trying it out, it turned into more of a flat coaster with a small border — and that is exactly what creates the special effect. When you place a mug on it, it looks as if the little tulips are growing up along the mug. With the heart version, on the other hand, you get a small, lovely border that is especially fitting for Mother’s Day.

This makes the coaster a wonderful small Mother’s Day gift, especially together with a pretty mug, tea, coffee, or a few sweets. It is not a big gift, but a thoughtful little item that can actually be used in everyday life.

What I especially like about small projects like this is that they do not require much material but still look like a complete gift idea. You can easily use leftover yarn and choose the colors to match the person you are making it for. Green and pink look classic and spring-like, of course, but yellow, lilac, white, or brighter tulip colors also work beautifully.

The basic shape is kept intentionally simple: a round coaster, with the border added afterward. This keeps the project manageable and makes it suitable even if you do not have much experience with crochet patterns yet. The tulip border creates a spring-like effect, while the heart border is a little more classic for Mother’s Day.

I especially like the coaster as part of a small “time for yourself” gift. You could give it together with a favorite mug, a special tea, coffee, hot chocolate, or a few chocolates. A small voucher for a shared coffee break also goes very well with it. This turns a simple crochet project into a personal gift that is not only decorative, but can also make a small everyday moment a little nicer.

To me, this mug coaster is exactly the right mix of practical, quick, and thoughtful. It is small enough to crochet even on short notice, but the border still makes it feel special. And once a mug is placed on top, you immediately see the little effect that makes this project so charming.

Below, I’ll show you step by step how to crochet the coaster and decorate it with either a tulip border or a heart border.

Materials

• Cotton yarn in different colors
• 2.5 mm / 3.0 mm crochet hook, or a hook size suitable for your yarn
• Yarn needle
• Scissors
• Optional for gifting:
• a pretty mug
• tea, coffee, hot chocolate, or sweets
• a small card or gift voucher
• In general, you can use any yarn with a matching hook size. Just make sure the coaster does not turn out too loose, so it has a little stability and the border shows nicely.

Size

The size of the finished coaster depends on the yarn you use and your crochet tension.

Abbreviations

• st = stitch
• ch = chain
• MR = magic ring
• sc = single crochet
• sl st = slip stitch
• dc = double crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• BO3 = bobble stitch made of 3 double crochets
• BO5 = bobble stitch made of 5 double crochets
• inc = increase, 2 sc in one stitch
• BLO = back loop only

Notes

You can crochet the base either in spiral rounds or in joined rounds. The border itself is worked in joined rounds.

For the tulip border, you need a stitch count that is divisible by 3. In this pattern, I work with 54 stitches.

The heart border is also designed for a base with 54 stitches. The first heart is closed across the round transition. If you want to change the stitch count, you should adjust the pattern using the crochet chart beforehand.

The crochet charts each show the pattern of the border. You can therefore follow either the written instructions or the crochet chart.

The numbers before each step indicate the round number.
The number in brackets at the end of each step indicates the stitch count at the end of the round.

Basic Instructions for the Base

Start with 2 ch or a MR.

R1: Crochet 8 sc into the 2nd ch from the hook or into the MR. (8)
R2: inc in each st. (16)
R3: inc in every 2nd st. (24)
R4: inc in every 3rd st. (32)
R5: inc in every 4th st. (40)
R6: inc in every 5th st. (48)
R7: inc in every 7th st 6 times, then crochet 6 sc. (54)
R8: 1 sc in each st, working in BLO only. (54)

Now work the border of your choice.

Version 1: Tulip Border

Change to light green.

R9: 3 ch as a replacement for the first dc, then crochet 1 dc in each sc. Close the round with a sl st into the 3rd beginning ch. (54)

Change to dark green.

R10: 3 ch, skip 1 st, (1 dc, 1 ch, 1 dc) into the next st, skip 2 st, repeat from * to * until the end of the round. Close the round with a sl st into the 3rd beginning ch.

Change to yellow.

R11: 4 ch, (BO5 into the ch-space between the two dc of the previous round, 2 ch), repeat from * to * until the end of the round. Close the round with a sl st.

Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Version 2: Heart Border

Stay with white.

R9: 3 ch as a replacement for the first dc, then crochet 1 dc in each sc. Close the round with a sl st into the 3rd beginning ch. (54)

Change to red.

R10: 3 ch, crochet 2 dc into the same st and close them together.

Then repeat continuously: 3 ch, skip 6 st, (BO3, 2 ch, BO3) into the next st.

At the end of the round, crochet 3 ch, work BO3 into the last / first st, and close the round with a sl st into the chain space.

Change to white.

R11: 1 ch, 1 hdc, 2 ch.

Then repeat continuously: crochet 2 hdc into the stitches from R9 underneath the chain space, 2 ch, 1 hdc into the ch-space between the two parts of the heart, 2 ch.

Close the round with a sl st.

R12: 3 ch as a replacement for the first dc, then crochet 1 dc in each stitch. Close the round with a sl st.

Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

With this border, the first heart is closed across the round transition. If you are unsure about the written instructions, you can also use the crochet chart as a guide.
