These two wall hangings will have a very special place in my home. I love chickens, and I am a proud chicken mama myself, so this design just had to be. I love tapestry crochet because it feels like painting, just with a crochet hook and yarn. You can really let your creativity run free and in the end you create something truly beautiful.
Size:
With cotton Aran yarn (excluding the fringe)
Small chicken: approx. 10 x 13 cm
Large chicken: approx. 16 x 22 cm
Materials:
4 mm crochet hook
Cotton Aran yarn in various colours, I generally recommend to use Cotton as this is a preference for me.
One branch per design, approx. 22 cm for the small chicken and approx. 28 cm for the large chicken
Abbreviations: (I use US Terms)
ST: Stitch
SC: Single Crochet
CH: Chain stitch
DC: Double Crochet
SS: Slip Stitch
you can find the abbreviations for the colours in the material list for each Design.
Important information’s for the pattern:
-The beginning chain stitch is not counted as a stitch.
- Knowledge of tapestry crochet is a must as it's not explained.
- Knowledge about how to carry colours is a must, as I do not explain where I carried the yarn and where I started a new ball for the same colour.
- The even rows are the back rows and the uneven rows are always the front rows. This is important so you know where to leave the unused yarn hanging on the back.

Attaching to the Twig:
To attach the piece to the twig, I used a simple sewing needle and stitched the crochet piece onto the twig. Before that, I blocked the piece with my iron, as it was quick and easy, especially since I used cotton yarn.
First, I measured the yarn by loosely wrapping it around the twig about 22 times, then cut it to the required length. This ensured I had enough yarn to work evenly. For the small design, I stitched every stitch onto the twig, while for the large design I only stitched every second stitch, which also works well and saves a bit of time.
I then attached the hanger. For this, I cut a piece of yarn approximately 40 cm long and tied knots at both ends.

Attaching the Fringe:
For the small design, I used two colours for the fringe and attached them to every stitch. For the large design, I used only one colour and attached the fringe to every second stitch.
For the small design, I cut the strands to approx. 8 cm and used about 10 strands per colour. For the large design, I cut the strands to approx. 10 cm and attached a total of 16 strands along the bottom edge.
To attach the fringe, simply insert your crochet hook through the stitch and pull the strands through.
Finally, trim all fringes to the same length and weave in any loose ends.
