I especially love appliques because they are so versatile. They can be sewn onto clothing, bags, or baby blankets, and they are also perfect for creating handmade cards. In addition, appliqués require very little yarn, making them a great way to use up leftover yarn.

However, it is important to choose a yarn that matches the final purpose. For example, if you want to sew the appliqué onto a garment, you should make sure the yarn is washable.

I, personally, prefer using cotton yarn. It is available in many beautiful colours and is also very easy and pleasant to work with.

Size:
Approx. 3.5 x 5cm

Material:
DK Yarn in different colours, approx. 2 gr for each Balloon and a bit white for the string
Black: 6 gr. (B)
White: 18 gr. (W)
Red: 10 gr. (R)
(if you use a different weighted yarn you might need more or less of the yarn)
Crochet hook 2 mm

The Pattern is written in US terms:
St: Stitch

Create now the edge of the balloon by working 1 chain stitch after the last stitch.
Then crochet 10 single crochets evenly down along the left side.
Next, work 3 chain stitches. Crochet 1 double crochet into each stitch of the first Row (3 double crochets total). Work another 3 chain stitches, then join with a slip stitch into the same stitch where the last double crochet was made.
Continue by crocheting 11 single crochets evenly up along the right side. Finish the edging with a slip stitch into the first single crochet.

The balloon string:
Work 30 chain stitches in white. Weave in the starting yarn tail, but leave the ending yarn tail long enough, as it will be needed to attach the string to the balloon.
Attach the white yarn to the balloon by placing it from the back and wrapping it once around the balloon. I also tie the yarn together with the balloon’s starting yarn tail to keep everything secure and prevent it from slipping.
