Crochet Flower Tealight Holders – A Touch of Light for Special Moments

Wednesday, August 6, 2025

These delicate little tealight holders bring a cozy and loving atmosphere into your home. Whether used for back-to-school parties, summer dinners, or as a small handmade gift – they’re quick to make, easy to customize, and a beautiful way to light up your everyday life.

Because they’re not only perfect for your child’s first day of school, but also make a thoughtful thank-you gift for a teacher or a sustainable table decoration for a garden party – these flower tealight holders instantly create a warm, loving atmosphere. They’re quick to make and their delicate pattern casts beautiful light reflections.

This pattern includes two sizes – both designed for small tealight jars with different heights. The taller version includes a few extra rounds of single crochet to fit the glass, while the decorative flower pattern stays the same.

🌸 Why flower tealight holders fit so beautifully into family life

🧶 Quick to make & relaxing to crochet: Perfect for creative breaks – even if you only have an hour in the evening.

🧶 Designed together with your children: Let the little ones pick the colors while mom or grandma crochets. That way, the result becomes meaningful family decor.

🧶 Reusable & sustainable: Not a disposable decoration, but a handmade piece full of warmth – one you can bring out again and again.

💡 Back-to-school inspiration

I designed this decoration for my godchild’s first day of school – with the flower edge symbolizing the start of a new chapter. If you look closely, you’ll see a small flower next to the tealight in the photo – it’s actually from my Mom & Mini Headband Pattern and was simply repurposed as table decor.

It’s a lovely way to reuse leftover elements from other projects – and to add something personal to your celebration.

Once you have a bit more time, feel free to crochet the matching headband using this pattern link. Now it's only in german, but it will appear in english, i promise.

🧶 What You’ll Need:

  • Cotton yarn (weight 2–3 / light DK)
  • Crochet hook: 3.0 mm
  • 2 small tealight glasses (different heights: approx. 4–6 cm)
  • Scissors
  • Optional: LED tealights or real candles

Dimensions of the glasses used

Small glass: approx. 4 cm high, diameter approx. 4.5 cm

Larger glass: approx. 6 cm high, diameter approx. 5.5 cm

→ You can order the glasses I used directly from Amazon using this link. Otherwise, you can of course adapt the instructions to other glasses by crocheting more or fewer rounds of increases and rounds of single crochet stitches. However, the number should always be divisible by 6, as the flowers are always designed to fit this number.

We will use the following stitches:

Chain stitch: Pull the loop through the hook

Slip stitch: Insert the hook into a stitch, pull the yarn through, and then pull it through the loop on the hook

Single crochet: Insert the hook into a stitch, pull the yarn through, then yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook

Half double crochet: Yarn over, insert the hook into the next stitch, pull the yarn through, then yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook

Double crochet: Yarn over, insert the hook into the next stitch, pull the yarn through (three loops on hook), yarn over, pull through the first two loops, yarn over again, then pull through the last two loops

Pattern – Small Version

First, crochet in the classic round way. This version fits glasses with approx. 4–4.5 cm height and 4.5 cm diameter.

Base

  2. Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sts)
  3. Round 3: 1 sc, 2 sc in next st – repeat (18 sts)
  4. Round 4: 2 sc, 2 sc in next st – repeat (24 sts)

Round 7: Work 1 sc in back loop only of each stitch (36 sts).

This creates a neat edge where the side starts to rise.

You can see how this works in this picture:

You stitch between the two loops that are present at the top of your crochet work.

Open Flower Pattern

The open section forms the flower-like body of the tealight holder. It consists of 4 defined rounds, alternating between loops and connections:

Round 1:

After the chain stitch, crochet:

  • One single crochet,
  • nine chain stitches,
  • slip stitch into the same single crochet

  • One single crochet,
  • nine chain stitches,
  • slip stitch into the same single crochet

Then: four chain stitches – skip four stitches.

→ repeat to end of round, close with a slip stitch.

Round 2:

  • With 5 slip stitches, move to the top of the first 9-stitch loop.
  • Chain 5 stitches,
  • Join the next two loops with two single crochet stitches cast off together. (Make sure that the second of the two loops is always joined to the first loop following it, as this is the only way to create the flower.)

→ Repeat all the way around.

Round 3:

  • Same as round 1 (Start directly on the middle of the emerging flower):
    – single crochet, 9 chain stitches, slip stitch, first stitch, 9 chain stitches, slip stitch, then 4 ch → next segment.

Round 4:

  • Same as round 2:
    – with slip stitches to the tip, 4 chain stitches, join the loops with single crochet stitches cast off together.

Flower Border (end edge)

To ensure the flower wreath is securely attached to the rest of the piece, your tealight cover now needs a round of single crochet stitches. To do this, crochet two single crochet stitches onto the tips of each petal from the open section and four single crochet stitches into the four chain stitches in between. This brings you back to your pattern, which is divisible by 6. The edge is then attached to it by crocheting eight double crochet stitches into the second single crochet stitch of the four single crochet stitches on the chain stitch row after a rising chain. This creates a beautiful, soft floral look.

This is what it looks like when finished:

The pattern creates a beautiful play of light – ideal for summer evenings or festive tables.

Optional second variation – for slightly taller glasses
For the slightly larger tealight glass, approximately 6 cm high, crochet the same base as for the small version. After the round with 36 single crochet stitches, follow:

an additional round of single crochet stitches with 6 increases (5 single crochet stitches, 1 double crochet stitch*, repeat 6 times (42 stitches)) → this gives the cover more circumference and fits the glass better.

Then crochet 42 single crochet stitches in the back loop, followed by 2 rounds of 42 single crochet stitches, crocheted normally → this makes the cover taller and also reaches the top of the glass.

Next, crochet the open flower pattern exactly as for the small version.

(If you follow this guide, you'll know the easiest way to adjust the size.)

💡Tip: Extra stability
If you want the flower edge to stand out nicely, you can lightly spray the finished crocheted cover with starch or steam it (be careful with cotton!).

Conclusion: A little break, a big impact
For me, these flower tea lights are more than just decoration – they're a little piece of peace, creativity, and connection. Whether for a school enrollment, a summer festival, or just for yourself: With just a few stitches, you can bring so much warmth into your home. I wish you lots of crochet fun!

All the best,
Franziska from Mit Liebe verbunden
