Crochet Decorative Shells – 15 to 25 cm for a Beach Look (EN & DE)

Crochet decorative shells — shells of 15 to 25 cm that can be stiffened with paste and set on a stick in a piece of driftwood. PDF pattern, instant download, in English and in German.

One pattern gives you very different shells: work with the finer hook and you get a small delicate shell, take the larger hook and a double strand and you get a big sturdy one. The photos show four of them side by side — the same pattern, four different results. The rim of the shell is folded outwards, and the curved shape comes from switching between single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet within a single row. Whether you lay the shells down or set them up on driftwood as a display is up to you — both ways are described.

Chains, single crochet, slip stitches, half double crochet, double crochet, magic circle, increases and decreases.
Worked first in closed rounds, then in rows (turning with a chain); in places only the inner loop of the stitch is used.
Every row is numbered and the stitch count is given at the end of each row.

Finished size: 15 to 25 cm / 6 to 10 inches, without the wooden parts.
The smaller shells are made with the finer hook, the larger ones with the bigger hook and a double strand of yarn.
Gauge with the bigger hook: 18 stitches x 20 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches

Per shell:

• approx. 30 to 50 g cotton yarn in turquoise, mint, white or dark grey (I used Drops Cotton Light, 50 g = 105 m / 115 yds)
• crochet hook to match your yarn, darning needle, scissors
  If you would like to set the shells up as a display, you will also need:
• a stick of approx. 25 cm / 10 inches, wood or similar, in black
• a piece of wood as a base (driftwood or weathered wood looks best)
• paste for stiffening, wood or hot glue, a drill bit matching the stick
