Babyhat STRAWBERRY MUFFIN, knitting pattern in 2 sizes

Many sweet strawberries for sweet babies! With a double layered brim and soft yarn, babies will be warm and happy. And the grown ups have fun knitting up the hat for a beloved new girl or boy!

Skill level: advanced
You are familiar with stranded knitting in the round and weaving in long strands – there is no tutorial included!
You will work mainly with charts and pattern repeats.

Size 1, approx 6 to 12 month. Hat fits head circumference of approximately 44 to 47 cm / 17.3 to 18.5 inches.
Height approx 18 cm / 7.1 inches (without stem).

Size 2, approx 1 to 2 years. Hat fits head circumference of approximately 47 to 50 cm / 18.5 to 19.7 inches.
Height approx 19 cm / 7.5 inches (without stem).

Gauge
Work your swatch in stranded knitting and block.
25–26 stitches x 34–35 rows = 10 x 10 cm = 4 x 4 inches

Original yarn
Hand dyed wool from BUNTE WOLLE Merino 300 or Feine Wolle 300
(both 100 % merino wool, 300 m/100 g)
Overall weight of hat size M approx. 60 g

• Green: 6 g
• Red: 17 g
• Yellow: 3 g
• White: 30 g
• Light green: 15 g
• Brown: 5 g
• Small amount in dark green for embroidery

Alternative yarns, for example

• Lana Grossa Cool Wool (160 m/50 g)
• Katia Merino Baby (165 m/50 g)
• Malabrigo Silky Merino (137 m/50 g)

Knitting needles

• Circular needle 2,5 und 3 mm (US 1½ and 2½)
• Set of double pointed needles in 3 mm (US 2½)

Good to know
Sheep wool without superwash properties, often from Shetland or Iceland, is probably the best yarn for stranded knitting. Nevertheless, I wouldn‘t recommend it for baby or chldren hats – it‘s too scratchy.
The yarn from BUNTE WOLLE I used is not as rough as the Shetland yarns, but very very soft; it works fantastic for stranded knitting.
You can use superwash yarns as well, but the fabric turns out different from shetland wool. If you have leftovers, for example from stuffed toys (like the Lana Grossa Cool Wool I use for my critters), you might use them. These merino qualities are very soft.
