Baby - toddler colorwork hat knitting pattern with cables

Inspired by the fairy tale of Rapunzel, this colorful little hat incorporates some cables that run from the crown to the bottom, just as if someone had said, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!”

The hat is worked in two colors of a sport weight yarn, mostly in corrugated ribbing which is very similar to stranded knitting. It is a snugly fitting hat but stretches to grow with the child.

Difficulty level: intermediate (working in the round on DPNs or circular needles, corrugated ribbing, cables)

Yarn: Steinbach Strapaz (80% wool, 20% nylon; 150m/50g; 164yds/1.76oz), 1 ball of each color. Sample in size newborn used 51m (56yds) of main color in yellow and 24m (26yds) of contrast color in blue. 1 ball of each color will be enough for all sizes.

Needles: 4mm/US 6 set of 5 DPNs or circular needles

Notions: yarn needle, cable needle, stitch marker (optional when using circulars)

Gauge: 24 stitches/30 rows in corrugated ribbing = 10cm/4in.

Sizes: newborn, 9-12 months, 2 years, 34, 42, 50cm (13 1/2, 16 3/4, 20in) in circumference when stretched, 13.5, 16, 18.5cm (5 1/2, 6 1/2, 7 1/2in) in length.
