Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working as a designer and author on many projects where crochet and knitting were about much more than simply creating beautiful patterns. Some were meant to bring joy. Others were created to support a meaningful cause.

This triangle shawl is one of those projects.

It was originally designed for a charity fundraiser in support of children with cancer. Together with Trendgarne, I had the opportunity to create a crochet pattern that – almost by chance – became part of this very special initiative.

At the time, I never imagined that this particular design would stay with me for so many years.

I honestly can’t remember how many of these shawls I’ve crocheted. 😅

There were a lot.

With every single one, I had the same thought in mind: to create something beautiful that would bring warmth, comfort, and perhaps even a little smile.

Once the charity event was over, the story of this shawl could easily have ended there.

But it didn’t.

Instead, this design stayed with me throughout the years. I kept thinking about it without really knowing why.

It wasn’t until many years later that I finally understood.

While writing my children's book, this very shawl – slightly redesigned – found its way into the story. It wasn’t something I had planned. Only after finishing the manuscript did I realize that the shawl had taken on exactly the same meaning in the story that it had always held for me during the charity project:

Protection. Comfort. Strength.

Perhaps that is what makes some handmade projects so special.

They carry stories with them.

That is why I wanted to share this pattern with you once again.

Not because it’s perfect.

Not because it’s new.

But because, even today, it still tells a very special story for me.

🌸 The Free Crochet Pattern

The triangle shawl is worked by following the crochet chart and is then decorated with small flowers and leaves. The appliqués are sewn on at the end, giving the shawl its own unique and heartfelt charm.

For this blog post, I also captured a few behind-the-scenes photos along the way. They let you follow the project step by step and see how a simple triangle shawl gradually transforms into a little sea of flowers.

Now it's time to get started!

Materials Used

LINIE 110 TIMONA
Colours: 

• No. 23 (Natural)
• No. 77 (Dark Blue)
• No. 78 (Berry)
• No. 89 (Emerald)

Of course, you can use any yarn you like. This is also a wonderful stash-busting project, especially for the flowers and leaves. Just make sure to choose a yarn that is suitable for children.

Yarn Requirements

• No. 23: approx. 22 g / 53 m (58 yds)
• No. 77: approx. 150 g / 401 m (439 yds)
• No. 78: approx. 20 g / 48 m (52 yds)
• No. 89: approx. 13 g / 31 m (34 yds)

Hook

4.00 mm (UK 8 / US G/6)

You will also need

• 13 decorative rhinestones (optional)
• Fabric glue (optional)
• Yarn needle

Gauge: Main pattern of the triangle shawl

• 24 stitches = 10 cm (4")
• 16 rows = 10 cm (4")

Finished Size

Triangle shawl: approx. 108 × 52 cm (42½ × 20½")

Abbreviations: UK Terms

ch = chain (US: chain)

dc = double crochet (US: single crochet)

htr = half treble crochet (US: half double crochet)

tr = treble crochet (US: double crochet)

5-tr cl = 5-treble cluster (US: 5-double crochet cluster)

sl st = slip stitch (US: slip stitch)

st / sts = stitch / stitches

Magic Ring = Magic Ring or work 6 ch and join with 1 sl st to form a ring.

Triangle Shawl: Excerpt from the Crochet Chart

Work Rows 1–4 once.

Then repeat Rows 3 and 4 alternately until a total of 32 rows have been completed or your desired shawl size has been reached.

Flower & Leaf Appliqués | Crochet Chart

Unlike the triangle shawl, each crochet chart for the flowers and leaves is worked only once. Once the final round has been completed, the corresponding flower or leaf is finished.

Instructions:       

First, work the triangle shawl by following the crochet chart.

Next, crochet the flowers and leaves using the corresponding crochet charts.

Finally, arrange the appliqués on the triangle shawl and sew them securely into place.

Colour Key:

• Colour A: No. 23 (Natural)
• Colour B: No. 77 (Dark Blue)
• Colour C: No. 78 (Berry)
• Colour D: No. 89 (Emerald)

Working the Shawl:

The triangle shawl is worked first by following the crochet chart in Colour B. The shawl consists of 32 rows in total, with Rows 20 and 30 worked in Colour A.

Next, crochet the appliqués according to the crochet charts as follows:

• Colour C: 1 large flower
• Colour A: 1 small flower
• Colour C: 12 small flowers
• Colour D: 2 large leaves
• Colour D: 12 small leaves

Assembly​​​​​​​:             

Lay the triangle shawl flat with the right side facing up.

Begin by sewing the two large leaves to the tip of the shawl. Next, attach the large flower, followed by the small natural-coloured flower in its centre.

Then, as shown in the photos, sew 6 small leaves onto each side of the shawl between the two white rows. Finally, position and sew the 6 small flowers onto the leaves.

If desired, finish the flowers by decorating them with the rhinestones.

Finally, weave in all loose ends.

Your triangle shawl is finished!

💙Sometimes, a Pattern Becomes Something More

Looking back, I'm grateful this shawl came into being.

Not only because of the charity project it was originally created for, but also because, many years later, it found its way back to me when I least expected it.

Not exactly as you see it here.

But carrying the very same message.

Perhaps that's exactly why some designs never truly leave us.
