Small crochet appliqués are perfect when you want a quick and creative project. Especially during summer, bright and playful motifs instantly add a cheerful vibe to your crochet creations. Whether you use them for bags, children’s clothing, hair accessories, pillows, or handmade gifts, summer-themed appliqués are incredibly versatile and also a great way to use leftover yarn.
In this tutorial, we’ll crochet three different summer motifs: a tiny tropical island with a palm tree, a cute popsicle, and a shining sun. All three projects are beginner-friendly, quick to make, and ideal for small crochet sessions in between larger projects.
Before You Start
Most of these appliqués are worked in rows. Try to keep your stitches even so the finished motifs lie flat and look neat. Small crochet pieces usually turn out best when worked fairly tightly.
The finished motifs can later be sewn onto crochet projects, glued onto accessories, or used as decorative embellishments for all kinds of summer crafts.
Materials
To crochet these summer appliqués, you will need:
- 2.5 mm crochet hook
- Cotton yarn (approximately 125 m / 50 g)
- Yarn scraps in green, brown, sand, yellow, and pink
- optional: stitch markers
- Scissors
- Yarn needle

Instructions
Crochet Tropical Island with Palm Tree
Palm Leaves (4 times)
Using green yarn and work in rows.
Ch 8.

Starting in the second chain from hook:
- 1 sc
- 2 hdc in the same stitch
- 3 times: 2 dc in the same stitch
- 2 dc
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Tie beginning and ending yarn tails together with a double knot.

Make 4 palm leaves in total.

Ch 11.

Starting in the second chain from hook:
- 10 sc
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Tie beginning and ending yarn tails together securely.

Island
The island is worked in rows, although it begins with a magic ring.
Using sand-colored yarn:
| Row 1: | 4 sc in MR | (4) |
Now pull the magic ring tight. Each of the following rows begins with a turning chain and is then worked in the opposite direction.

| Row 2: | ch 1, turn, 4 inc | (8) |
| Row 3: | ch 1, turn, [sc, inc] x4 | (12) |
| Row 4: | ch 1, turn, [2 sc, inc] x4 | (16) |
| Row 5: | ch 1, turn, [2 sc, inc, sc] x4 | (20) |
| Row 6: | ch 1, turn, [3 sc, inc, sc] x4 | (24) |
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Assembling the Tropical Island
First, place two palm leaves mirrored next to each other and sew them together. Then sew the remaining two leaves on top in the opposite direction to create the layered palm leaf effect.

Once finished, weave in all excess yarn ends carefully.
Next, sew the trunk centered underneath the palm leaves and weave in the yarn tails neatly.

Finally, sew the completed palm tree onto the island. Use the island’s yarn tail to position and attach the palm tree wherever desired. Secure everything carefully and weave in all remaining ends.

Your tropical island appliqué is now complete.
