sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch,
purl the last stitch.
Mattress stitch: Pick up 1 or 2 bars right after the selvage stitch and pull the
yarn through. On the other side, find opposing selvage stitch, pick up again 2
bars and pull the yarn through. Come to the other edge of your work, insert
the needle into the same hole that the yarn came out from before and pick
up the 2 bars again. Continue in this manner to the end adjusting the yarn
tension as you go.

If you want to try Sran knitting but have always shied away as it looks "too complicated" then get your needles and yarn out and get ready to go! If you can K1 and P1 or K2 together or P2 together then you can do Aran! And this lovely pattern is a great way to get started - a small project to introduce you to the delights of Aran patterns. Believe me you will never want to go back to stocking stitch again! Thanks for this lovely pattern which makes great girlfriend gifts!
I enjoyed knitting the twisted turban hat and the finished product is beautiful. My only gripe was that I had a lot of difficulty when trying to put it together despite watching the video tutorial several times. It was not easy to see how the hat was folded before sewing as the tutor's hands were in the way and the hat itself was extremely hard to see. I eventually managed but it was a very frustrating video to watch and try to mimic. I am not a novice knitter, I have been doing so for over 60 years.
