Pfeilgrad is an idiom that is often used in southern German regions and means something like "direct, actual, real". The design, which is reminiscent of arrows, and the choice of crocheting two variations of the shawl gave it its name.

Variation 1 is a zigzag edge, which forms a great contrast to the scalloped edge.

Variation 2 is a straight finish.

Although the shawl is worked from side to side, it is a symmetrical shawl.
