Altaira - A Tunisian crochet shawl in two versions

Altaira is a star-shaped Tunisian crochet shawl for yarn with a medium or long gradient.
It is worked top-down in Tunisian Simple Stitch and can be finished at any size.

Altaira Shawl can be made in two versions:
as half-circle and as 3/4-circle shape.

You should have a good knowledge of basic Tunisian crochet techniques.

Difficulty level: Intermediate

The pattern is written in US terms. Instructions are charted and written. The pattern contains instructions for both versions, chart and tutorial photo (8 pages total). Special stitches are explained.

The finished size depends on the yarns weight and the amount of yarn you use. This shawl can be finished at any size.

Half-circle version: approx. 145 x 66 cm (57 x 26 in), made with 200 gr. Schoppel Zauberball, 420 m / 100 gr.

3/4-circle version: approx. 130 x 63 cm (51 x 25 in), made with 1 Scheepjes Whirl, 1000 m / 225 gr.

You'll need fingering yarn with a medium or long colour change

• for the half-circle version: approx. 800-900 m (875-985 yds)
• for the 3/4-circle version: approx. 1000 m (1094 yds)

and a Tunisian crochet hook with cable size 5 mm (US 8/H, UK 6) or suitable for your yarn to achieve a nice drape.
