Crochet a flamingo – Flora and Fine, a pair in two sizes (EN & DE)

Flora and Fine are two flamingos with a long curved neck, a black and pink beak, thin legs with spread toes and big wings made from many individual feathers. The larger one is worked in pink, the smaller one in apricot – side by side they make a pair.

One pattern covers both: they are crocheted round for round in exactly the same way, the difference in size comes purely from yarn weight and hook. So you get two birds of about 20 cm / 8 inches and about 30 cm / 12 inches from a single set of rounds.

Neck, wings and legs are shaped with wire, so the neck can be bent and the toes turned forward. Even so the flamingos will not stand up on their own – they are made to lean, to sit and to decorate with.

Stitches used: chains, single crochet, slip stitches, half double crochet, magic circle as well as increases and decreases. Plus colour changes, sewing and threading the wire.

Every round is listed separately, with the stitch count at the end, and comes with photos. Putting the birds together takes a little patience: each wing is made up of many single feathers that are sewn on one after another – the photos show exactly in which order.

Level: intermediate

The finished flamingos are about 20 cm / 8 inches and about 30 cm / 12 inches tall.

Gauge large flamingo: 24 stitches x 22 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches (Schachenmayr Catania, hook size 2.5 mm).
Gauge small flamingo: 40 stitches x 37 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches (Schachenmayr Baby Smiles, hook size 2 mm).

Both are worked from the same set of rounds – the difference in size comes only from yarn and hook.

For both flamingos together:

• about 50 g of yarn in pink (large flamingo) or in apricot (small flamingo)
• left-overs in black, white, pink and natural
• wire
• stuffing
• two black half beads each – 8 mm for the small and 1 cm / 0.4 inches for the large flamingo
• masking tape
• crochet hook 2.5 mm (large flamingo) and 2 mm (small flamingo)
• darning needle, scissors and a pair of pliers
