With winter on its way, Louis has his hands – sorry, paws – full gathering enough food to see him through the colder months. Those two big acorns are certainly a good start. Now he just needs to find the perfect hiding place before another hungry woodland creature spots them …

With this amigurumi crochet pattern, you can make Louis and his acorns yourself. With his wonderfully bushy tail, little hat and scarf, he’s a charming autumn woodland character with plenty of personality – perfect for seasonal decorations, as a handmade gift for squirrel and amigurumi lovers, or simply as a little friend to keep for yourself.

The pattern includes detailed step-by-step instructions, plenty of helpful photos and additional crochet charts, making it suitable for confident beginners who are already familiar with the basic crochet techniques.

You should be familiar with:
magic ring, chain stitches, slip stitches, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and treble crochet.

Using the suggested materials, Louis will be approximately 20 cm (8 in) tall, measured from his feet to the tips of his ears.

Your finished squirrel may turn out slightly larger or smaller depending on your yarn, hook size and individual crochet tension.

• yarn in auburn, pale yellow, orange and dark brown, e.g. cotton yarn with approximately 125 m/50 g
• a suitable crochet hook, e.g. 3.0 mm
• brown or black safety eyes, approximately 12 mm
• stuffing
• a yarn needle for weaving in the ends
• 10–15 pins
• a pair of scissors

If you choose a yarn with a different weight or yardage, you may also want to adjust the size of the safety eyes to keep Louis nicely in proportion.

And of course, not every squirrel has to be auburn. Perhaps the one living in your crochet woodland is grey, dark brown or something altogether more colorful – feel free to make Louis your own.
