Crepidula is knit top-down and easy to knit, for beginners as well.
Crepidula is very appropriate for variegated yarns, because you can knit top-down with one single thread without breaking. You knit as long as there is wool left or you reach the desired length. You can also knit the lower egde with some matching yarn.
