Ostin the Octopus Crochet Pattern

Crochet Ostin, an original Olya Usolya design: a large plush octopus with eight two-color tentacles, fully crocheted eyes and an expressive face. The tentacles are constructed in two parts and attached while working the body, so much of the main assembly becomes part of the crocheting process itself.

The pattern includes step-by-step photo guidance and 4 linked videos for key construction stages. You can also use different yarns and adjust the scale of your Ostin, with guidance inside the pattern for choosing a suitable body-to-eye yarn and hook-size ratio.

Skill level: Intermediate — best suited to crocheters already comfortable with standard amigurumi construction.

You should be comfortable with:

• magic ring and spiral rounds
• single crochet, increases and decreases
• working shaped pieces
• color changes
• joining crocheted parts while working in the round
• sewing and simple embroidery for facial details

Construction reality:

• all eight tentacles are made from inner and outer parts
• the tentacles are attached while working the body
• the eyes are crocheted separately
• the eyes and blushes are sewn on
• the eyebrows and smile are embroidered
• this is not a no-sew pattern

With plush yarn around 120 m / 100 g (131 yd / 3.5 oz) and the documented hook setup, the finished Ostin is approximately:

• 18 cm / 7.1 in without the tentacles
• 42 cm / 16.5 in including the tentacles

You can use other yarn weights to make Ostin in a different scale. Finished size will vary with yarn thickness, hook size, tension, stitch style and stuffing.

For the body and tentacles:

• plush / chenille yarn around 120 m / 100 g (131 yd / 3.5 oz)
• suitable examples: Himalaya Dolphin Baby, YarnArt Dolce or a similar plush yarn
• approximately 1.5–2 balls of each color in the documented version
• main sample colors: blue for the body and outer tentacles, pink for the inner tentacles and blushes

For the eyes and facial details:

• semi-cotton yarn around 330 m / 100 g (361 yd / 3.5 oz)
• suitable examples: YarnArt Jeans, Gazzal Jeans, Alize Cotton Gold or similar
• black and white

Hooks:

• 3.5–4 mm for the plush-yarn body
• 2–2.5 mm for the eyes

Other supplies:

• polyester stuffing
• sewing needle
• stitch markers
• scissors

Can I use different yarn?
Yes. The design can be made with other yarns. As a practical guide, choose yarn for the body that is about twice as thick as the yarn used for the eyes, and use an eye hook approximately 1.5 mm smaller than your body hook.
