Half circle shaped shawl knitting pattern "Au coucher du soleil"

Product description

When the sun goes down, touching the world with its gentle light, and you get this feeling of having to go out into the night, please don’t forget your shawl. It might turn cold.

Au coucher du soleil – at sundown – is a half circle shaped shawlette worked from the top to the bottom. The construction is unusual, as it is worked in small garter strips from side to side. Each strip is joined to the one before as you go, as well as turning wider and finally ending in a ruffled edge.

Important note: You will notice that some of the strips are joined to each other by very long loops. In my sample they were done without working any yarn overs or wraps. I had several people try these loops, some succeeded and some didn’t. The rows in question are marked bold in the pattern. The length of the loops is very much dependent on your knitting tension. If you have troubles achieving a look that you like, I suggest working those specific rows with an additional double-wrap.

Difficulty level: intermediate/experienced (garter stitch, knitted cast on, increases, unusual shawl construction. The most difficult part is getting the loops.)

Yarn: Rapallo sock yarn (45% cotton, 40% wool, 15% nylon; 380m/100g; 416yds/3.53oz), 2 balls. Sample used 433m/474yds.

Needles: 4mm/US 6 circual needles

Notions: yarn needle

Gauge: 24 stitches/38 rows in garter stitch = 10cm/4in.

Size:115 x 43cm (46 x 17 1/4in)
