Are you looking for a cute gift for a child starting school? Then this little pencil with its adorable backpack is just the thing!

This cute pencil can be crocheted as a graphite pencil or a colored pencil.

It can be a faithful companion for those first days of school, or a cute cuddly friend. Or both. :)

The backpack can be removed at any time and is not permanently attached to the pencil.

Depending on the yarn weight used, the backpack can hold small to larger surprises.

For the pencils shown in the pattern, I used Sport weight yarn (e.g. Katia Capri). However, there is also a small reference table for DK yarn (e.g. Puppets Lyric 8/8) and Bulky yarn (e.g. myboshi Samt). The table includes yarn usage, required needle sizes, eye sizes, etc.

All steps are explained in detail in words and pictures, so this pattern is suitable for (practiced) beginners as well.
This pattern contains 12 pages of crochet instructions and 15 additional pages of detailed step-by-step instructions.

Used techniques (US crochet terms): magic ring, chain, single crochet, increases and (invisible) decreases, crocheting in front loops and back loops, changing yarn-color.
The figures are crocheted in continuous rounds/spirals as well as back and forth in rows.

With 2.0 mm hook and Sport weight yarn the pencils get to be 9 x 4 cm big (without arms & legs).
With 3.0 mm hook and Sport weight yarn the backpack gets to be 4 x 4 x 2 cm big (width x height x depth).

You need it smaller or bigger? No problem! Simply use lighter or heavier yarn.
A table with info on sizes and yarn amounts for DK and Bulky yarn is included within the pattern.
With DK yarn the pencil gets to be 13 x 6 cm big and the backpack 6 x 6 x 3 cm.
With Bulky yarn the pencil gets to be 27 x 13 cm big and the backpack 10 x 10 x 5 cm.
