M1K stands for “make one knitwise” and represents a common method for increasing the stitch count in a row. You create a new stitch by picking up the horizontal bar between needles and knitting into it, distinct from a yarn over which creates a hole. To ensure the fabric remains solid, the lifted loop is usually knitted through the back leg to twist it and close the gap.
