Begun on the train to Vienna, I found these socks rather relaxing and mindless, perfect for those idle times when you want something to do with your hands but don't want to think too much.

If you are familiar with knitting socks, these will be a no-brainer for you.

Difficulty level: adventurous beginner (working in the round on DPNs, cuff-down sock construction, knit and purl)

• k: knit
• p: purl
• sl: slip
• k2tog: knit 2 stitches together
• p2tog: purl 2 stitches together
• skp: slip 1 stitch, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over

Gauge: 28 stitches/46 rows in stitch pattern = 10cm/4in.

Yarn: Zwerger Garn Opal Hundertwasser Sparkle (71% wool, 26% nylon, 3% metallic; 425m/100g; 465yds/3.53oz), 1 ball.

Needles: 2.5mm/US 1 1/2 set of 5 DPNs
